Ryu ‘leads team in second-half ERA’ snaps two three-game losing streaks…will he play on Sunday?
Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Hyun-jin Ryu will take the mound after four days of rest for the first time since returning from injury.먹튀검증
According to the Toronto team website, Hyun-jin Ryu will take the mound against the Oakland Athletics at 4:37 p.m. ET on April 7 at Oakland Coliseum in Oakland, California. It will be Ryu’s seventh start of the season after returning from Tommy John surgery last month. The rotation for the three-game series against Oakland is Jose Berrios, Chris Bassett, and Hyun-jin Ryu.
The A’s are 42-95 through four days, fifth in the American League West and tied with the Kansas City Royals (42-96) for last place in the majors. Their team ERA of 5.64 ranks last out of 30 teams. They also rank last in team batting average (.224), team OPS (.670), and runs scored (3.68). The team’s decision to move their franchise to Las Vegas has also turned fans against them, and they’ve been a mess all season.
It’s a tough matchup for Toronto, who need one win, and for Ryu, who needs to spur his resurgence.
Toronto wrapped up its three-game series in Denver with a 7-5 win over the Colorado Rockies on Sunday, taking the series 2-1. At 75-62, they remain in third place in the AL East and the fourth wild card spot. They closed the gap to 1.5 games on the third wild card, the Houston Astros. Toronto will have to play all 25 games of the remaining season like a final.
In this situation, Hyun-jin Ryu has been the “eldest brother” on the mound and has been an anchor.
In six games, Ryu is 3-1 with a 2.48 ERA. He was limited to just 29 innings last month after a four-hit shutout against the Cleveland Indians on May 8, when he was hit in the knee by a hard-hit ball and suffered a bruise, but he still pitched like an ace with eight walks and 23 strikeouts, a 1.034 WHIP, and a .213 batting average.
In fact, since joining the rotation in August, Hyun-jin Ryu has been more consistent than any other starter.
In the same period, Kevin Gausman went 2-3 with a 4.55 ERA in six games, Bassitt went 3-1 with a 3.03 ERA in five games, Berrios went 1-3 with a 5.53 ERA in five games, and Yusei Kikuchi went 1-2 with a 3.15 ERA in six games.
In the 22 games the quartet pitched, Toronto went 10-12 with a winning percentage of less than 5%. In the six games that Ryu has started, however, Toronto has gone 5-1. They’ve won five in a row, except for a loss in his return on August 2. It’s safe to say that Ryu is the most reliable starter in baseball, at least after August. His second-half ERA is the best among the five starters.
It’s also important for an ace to be a streak-breaking stopper, and Ryu has snapped the team’s three-game losing streak twice. He won back-to-back starts against the Chicago Cubs on August 14 (5 innings, 2 runs) and Cleveland on August 27 (5 innings, 2 runs) to end the three-game losing streak.
The Oakland game will be Ryu’s first five-day start of the season, and his body fatigue could be a factor. Ryu was removed from the game at 76 pitches after allowing two runs on four hits over five innings in Colorado on April 2. Manager John Schneider used his freshly rested bullpen early to try to build on a 4-2 lead, but the bullpen gave up a run in the top of the sixth inning and the A’s eventually won 13-9 in a late-game blowout. At the time, Schneider said that there was also a level of sparing Ryu in light of the Oakland game.
In his career, Ryu is 26-14 with a 3.27 ERA on four days’ rest. That’s better than his record on five days’ rest (34-21, 3.44).
Oakland’s starting pitcher against Ryu is left-hander JP Sears. Sears, who made his major league debut last year, is 3-11 with a 4.36 ERA, 138 strikeouts, a 1.220 WHIP, and a 0.249 BABIP in 27 games this season in 146⅔ innings pitched. Notably, he has allowed 31 home runs, second in the AL behind only Jordan Lyles of the Kansas City Royals (34).
