The first opponent, Tunisia, is an African powerhouse ranked 31st by the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). South Korea (28th) is winless in the last two meetings with a 1-1 draw. They drew 0-0 in the first meeting in March 2002 and lost 0-1 in May 2014.
Tunisia were knocked out of Group D at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar with one win, one draw, and one loss, but managed to pull off an upset with a 1-0 win over France.
Their second opponent, Vietnam, is ranked 95th in the FIFA rankings, well below South Korea, but the highest among Southeast Asian nations. South Korea leads the all-time series with 17 wins, five draws and two losses. The last meeting between the two sides was in the second Asian qualifying round for the 2006 World Cup in Germany in September 2004, setting up a rematch after 19 years. In announcing the October A-Match opponents, the association explained that it would be looking to “find ways to break down dense defenses against Asian teams in preparation for the 2026 North and Central American World Cup qualifiers and next year’s Asian Cup.”
