‘The lineup from last month’s trial has been carried over to the North American World Cup qualifiers’. According to the Korea Football Association on Sunday, Klinsmann’s side will open the second round of qualifying with an 8 p.m. match against Singapore at the Seoul World Cup Stadium on Sept. 16, followed by a 9 p.m. away match against China in Shenzhen, China, on Sept. 21. The roster for the two matches, which will be the team’s last before the Asian Football Confederation (APC) Asian Cup in January/February next year, is largely comprised of players who have consistently earned Klinsmann’s call-ups, led by ‘Captain’ Son Heung-min (Tottenham).
The roster is almost identical to the one used in last month’s two exhibition games against Tunisia (4-0 win) and Vietnam (6-0 win). The only difference is that the total number of players has been reduced by one to 23, with goalkeeper Kim Jun-hong (Gimcheon) replaced by Song Bum-geun (Shonan Belmare) and defender Kim Joo-sung (Seoul).
In addition to Son Heung-min, there are several European players on the roster, including Kim Min-jae (Bayern Munich), Lee Kang-in (Paris Saint-Germain), Lee Jae-sung (Mainz), Hwang Hee-chan (Wolverhampton), and Cho Kyu-sung (Metzwilan). Kickers Moon Sun-min (Jeonbuk), Jung Seung-hyun (Ulsan), Lee Ki-je (Suwon), Kim Jin-soo (Jeonbuk), Kim Tae-hwan (Ulsan) and Lee Sun-min (Gwangju) were also included. Song Bum-geun is returning to the national team after a five-month absence.
The team will convene at a hotel in Seoul on the afternoon of the 13th to train at the Mokdong Sports Complex’s main stadium before traveling to China on the 19th after the match against Singapore on the 16th. Klinsmann will hold a media conference on the morning of the 13th to reveal the background of the player selection and general details of the call-up, according to the KFA.
The second round of World Cup qualifying will see 36 nations compete in nine groups of four teams, with the first- and second-place finishers in each group advancing to the third round of World Cup qualifying and earning a spot in the 2027 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia. To qualify for the World Cup, teams must finish in the top two spots in the third round of qualifying, which features 18 second-place finishers divided into three groups. If a team finishes third or fourth in the third round, they will still have a chance to qualify for the fourth round.
